Transfer News: David Moyes will buy again!

Depending on the source of news it was reported that the Glaziers will sanction big money for manager David Moyes to dip into the winter transfer window – and shop. Various names had been linked, notably Ander Hererra of Athletic Bilbao, Leighton Baines of Everton and Fabio Coentrao of Real Madrid. Of the three probably Coentrao will be European cup-tied leaving Baines and Herrera as the more obvious choices – do we need them?
What Manchester United needed is a strong midfield player – a player in the mould of Roy Keane, Patrick Viera or Yahya Toure and even the one that left Old Trafford recently – Paul Progba. Someone who will control the midfield with whoever he is partner with. Ander Herrera is highly rated by United’s hierarchy but he is rather inexperience – especially in Premier League. For someone unproven the £30 plus million transfers fee is rather high and requires United to break their transfer record. With David Moyes’ record of being conservative it is a rather unlikely transfer unless Moyes is absolutely convince. It looks likely that Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini will fill this position for the remainder of the season.

David Moyes also has his eyes for another creative midfielder, with Cesc Fabregas and Luka Modric continued to be linked. But these two players will be cup tied and sensibly Moyes would pass them, at least till the next summer. It is also hard to get a midfield player – box to box player who also possess that decisive passes – as what Yahya Toure is doing for Manchester City. Most of the targets Moyes was after were more of a creative midfielder only or holding midfielder. Alternatively Moyes could always opt for Shinji Kagawa whose preference is the No 10 role, to fill the position in front of the central midfield. With his creative ability, Kagawa could be the one use to unlock opposition’s defenses and given Wayne Rooney’s ability to play in central midfield both he and Kagawa could rotate this role within the game to provide more threats, and support for Robin Van Persie.

Leftback position is another of David Moyes’ target but would Moyes or Manchester United wants to pay more than £20 million (looks likely to be the amount that could make Everton letting go of Baines) for a player that is already 29 years old. Beside, a look across the United team currently sees another former Everton’s player (Fellaini) struggling to adapt to life with the ‘big boys’ of English football. A sensible choice would be Luke Shaw from Southampton who is young but playing in the Premier League. While Patrice Evra is still the incumbent, he is showing his age and probably needs stronger competition from within to produce his best consistently. Maybe another loan move for Fabio Coentrao is on the card by Moyes during the winter transfer window – but that probably means Coentrao could be cup tied?

It is obvious that the results so far has been disastrous for Manchester United and David Moyes admission that five or six world class players are needed to win the Champions League. Where is he going get these five or six world class players is everyone’s question – it is after all mid season and the available world class players are most probably cup-tied! Or is this just a further cover up for United’s fans to brace themselves for trophy-less season? Realistically this is the title winning squad Moyes inherited and while to most experts this is probably and arguably the weakest team in Alex Ferguson winning era, a lot of wins are actually the result of the manager – Ferguson alone is worth a lot of points to United. Therefore it is the manager that is the biggest factors in turning the squad from average into a title winning one. It is here that David Moyes needs to get down to do his job. Get down and correct the mentality of the team, get down and improve the team tactically, get down and fire up the players’ hunger. In the end even if Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale is in United current team the results will probably be the same as the hunger and winning mentality is not there.
