Premier League – Manchester United 1 Arsenal 0: This is the stuff of champions!

What a result – despite the 1-0 scoreline. It is the manner in which Manchester United won that has changed a lot of perception about them – and their title hopes. This is the Arsenal team sitting on top of the Premier League table – eight points ahead of United, the defending champion.
David Moyes will be the most relief man, along with millions of loyal die-hard Manchester United supporters. This is the result most welcome, at the most wanting time. Generally the performance was top notch but one in particular stood out – Phil Jones. Despite numerous critics suggesting Jones’ versatility will be his downfall – in terms of his future as a key player in a team, it is actually comforting for United’s supporters (as well as England) that there is such talent. For United of course, it is the one area missing since the days of Roy Keane. New signing Marouane Fellaini has yet to make any impact in that role – after being used by Moyes in a variety of roles. Michael Carrick will be over 33 years old by the time the World Cup finish next year. As of now there is no midfield player within the United team that seem to be capable enough to take over Carrick, therefore Jones’ versatility is most welcome.

As time progress David Moyes will probably ease into his more settle starting XI thus giving Manchester United the consistencies needed. The coming fixture after the international breaks will be tough, with up to 10 games in December alone (United host Tottenham Hotspurs on January 1 2014). This will be the period where the real title contenders will start to distance themselves from the rest, and this is where United’s transition into the new post Alex Ferguson era will take shape. Therefore the win over league leader Arsenal as well as the international break will provide United the impetus to push on once the season resume with the visit to Cardiff City.
