David Moyes 1st Real Test: Are we confident?

Pass his first competitive test he did, convincing? No. Not when you are playing against a championship side like Wigan Athletic – no disrespect. But the win over Wigan saw shades of Sir Alex Ferguson, in styles and in formation and in the team itself too…
Of course it will be. Without any new addition (with the exception of Wilfred Zaha), the core of the team is the same as the team that won the 20th League title last season. Given the pre season form it is not surprising the way Manchester United played. 4-4-2 seems to be what David Moyes was using when lining up his team at Wembly The flanks were again the key, where most attacking play were pass to. In the middle of the park, Michael Carrick was given the Man of the Match. Deservedly so, and players like Carrick often goes under the radar when their team either win, or win unconvincingly. Patrice Evra is another player that performs well – did we need Leighton Baines? However the sights of Ryan Giggs sharing the flanks with youngster Wilfred Zaha brings both positive and negative. Positive in the sense that we have youngster that appear capable of producing a winger-like performance. Negative in the sense that the reliance is still on Giggs. Approaching 40 this year Giggs is almost twice Zaha’s age, it’s like a father-son combination on the wings for United. The probable excuse is that Nani and Ashley Young are out with injuries. But with Antonio Valencia has not been able to produce top form, Zaha is made to look rather good in the wings. Make no mistakes Wilfred Zaha is top talent, only a little too ‘raw’ at the moment. Up front Danny Welbeck combine well with Robin Van Persie in the absence of Wayne Rooney. One of the brightest moment of the game is when Adnan Januzaj and Shinji Kagawa came on. They did provide attacking flair’ needed especially the game seems to be heading towards a dull ending.

Fans expecting to watch a ‘completely’ new Manchester United will be disappointed. This is a game of importance to David Moyes. It is not a game to show how slick the team can be with the type of talented forwards he has at his disposal. Rather, given the below average of pre season performance, this game will measure up as Manchester United form in a competitive match. With the win it will be a confidence boaster for David Moyes and his reign at Old Trafford. One will not likely to see a firm starting XI just yet. Many United fans do hope that players like Adnan Januzaj and Wilfred Zaha be given enough first team opportunities – be it from the bench – to show the world that big signing may not be necessary, as long as the manager knows what he is doing.
