Transfer News/Updates: 20 August – Be prepare - another deadline signing (s) summer

Less than two weeks to go before the transfer window shuts, there is only that one signing, Guillermo Varela from Penarol who? And while David Moyes and the Manchester United’s hierarchy insist that they are working hard behind the scenes towards new signings, indication so far is that United may well goes into the new season as they were last season – minus Paul Scholes.
As with cases of new managerial changes at big clubs, i.e. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and City, the new guy always takes his time to access – the current squad. Instead of spending time in targeting new players, the new manager would want to get to know his squad first, knowing their strength and weakness, trying out his formation as well as his training method on the squad. This is exactly what David Moyes is trying to do, getting to know United’s players in the squad first and knowing how to use them to their strength. Besides, he inherited a title winning squad from Sir Alex Ferguson with players of qualities so vastly different from his former Everton’s squad. Additionally with the ongoing Wayne Rooney’s saga, Moyes will have his hands full. As such aside from new signings United fans may also get use to the idea of no players leaving, at least not during this particular transfer window.

The Luka Modric, Mesut Ozil, Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines links continues but without the necessary solid backing for the speculation. Midfielders seem to be on the top of the priority lists for Manchester United therefore links with Modric and Fellaini are understandable. Fellaini for one looks a better bet to come to Old Trafford with Champions League football and chances of winning silverware as well as personal development as enticements. But United’s strategy of letting Fellaini’s contract clause expire may backfire. With Arsenal missing out target after target coupled with opening day home loss to Aston Villa, Arsene Wenger will become more and more desperate with new signing. Armed with sizeable funds, Wenger may soon move for Fellaini and may even be willing to pay way over the odds to secure his (Fellaini) services.

With two weeks to go before the transfer window ends, there may still be happy ending for Manchester United’s fans but the last things most fans would want is – desperation signing.
