Should Nani be allowed to go?

Sir Alex Ferguson had a great deal of patience when it comes to Nani. With reports suggesting that Nani is not part of David Moyes’ plan it is therefore not surprising that Nani himself is seriously looking to seek a transfer elsewhere. Juventus, Monaco have been link, even Arsenal. The latest links comes from Russia based club – Anzhi Makhachkala, managed by Guus Hiddink and former Manchester United first team coach, Rene Meulensteen.
Once considered Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘terror partners in the wings’ and even replacement should Ronaldo choose to leave, this player is not short on talent. Fast, tricky with Ronaldo’s like stepover as well as possessing amazing shots, Nani is plagued by inconsistencies, if not injuries. Nani had one great season at Manchester United where at best he won an individual award. At other times, fans often wander who show up in that no 17 jersey. Take for example last season at a League Cup match against Chelsea at Stanford Bridge (bearing in mind that 3 days ago Man Utd had beaten Chelsea in a league match marred by controversies involving the then referee Mark Clattenburg), Manchester United were leading 3-2 with less than 3 minutes of regulation time to go, a certain Portuguese winger decided to take the ball on a ‘lone ranger’ mission up the right flank. Needless to say he loses possession of the ball which ultimately arrived at Man Utd’s penalty box and a Chelsea player brought down by an inexperience centre half. The result would be Chelsea equalized and went on to win in extra time. Or, at one of the biggest match of the season (Champions League match against Real Madrid) where Nani was the surprise selection ahead of – Wayne Rooney. His air high lunge at Arbeloa resulted in a straight red while Manchester United was 1-0 up. Again, Real Madrid went on to win 2-1 against 10-men Manchester United. Or, the dreadful back header in Man Utd’s loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Gifted footballer as he is, but in the end of the day Nani needs to perform week in week out to warrant a mention among players that fans consider ‘great’. For now it seems that as the new season looms the talk is that Nani is on the way out with competitions for wingers among Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and now Wilfred Zaha. Perhaps David Moyes being new to job might wants to see if Nani can contribute to the team. Most fans would welcome the idea of Nani staying and most fans would be fine if Nani decided to leave.
