The Anderson Dilemma

Anderson was once dubbed as the new Ronaldinho, arrived from Porto with high expectations. Early suggestion was that he is an attacking midfielder, or even the second striker. The old Anderson is terrible with his finishing. It took Anderson several season to register his competitive goal for Manchester United. It did improve last season where his goal tally effectively doubled......

For all his flairs Anderson, like Nani suffered from inconsistencies as well as injuries. His best season (and probably his best position) was during Manchester United’s 2nd successive run to champion league final (where Man Utd where beaten by Barcelona). Back then Anderson, together with Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher dominate the midfield in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 formation where Arsenal was completely routed in 2- legged semifinal. Sadly Darren Fletcher picked up a red card and against Barcelona, with Ryan Giggs replacing Daren Fletcher in the midfield, Manchester United was never able to control the game thus unable to become the first team in the champions league to defend their title.

In the season where Manchester United lose the league title to Manchester City by goal difference, Anderson together with Tom Cleverly form a highly energetic and effective central midfield partnership to start the season with a bang, which also include the 8-2 annihilation of Arsenal. Tom Cleverly was later injured in a match against Bolton and Manchester United lose that momentum in the midfield soon after. Anderson too suffered from injuries, and he and Tom Cleverly rarely featured consistently as the season progresses.

Anderson had mentioned that if anyone were to leave Manchester United, only Real Madrid and Barcelona (maybe Bayern Munich too) were the only teams worth going to. Any other teams would be consider a step down. Judging by the non-existent of interests register from these 3 clubs, most Manchester United fans can safely assume that Anderson is staying, preferring to stay as a squad player. Then again with new manager in David Moyes, Anderson might just have another opportunity to re-establish himself again as a firm team player.
