What
a start to Manchester United’s season under new manager David Moyes – worst
starts in more than 24 years. Hopes of retaining the Premier League title has
been written off by many. In cup competitions will now lay any hopes of
silverware and United is involved in two of them – the Champions League and the
Capital One Cup, both considered different categories of prestige but
silverware nonetheless.Against
Real Sociedad, Manchester United must win – end of story. Without disrespecting
Sociedad this tie is a must win for Moyes after a difficult start to his reign
at United. Sociedad is considered the weakest team in United’s group but if
United approach this game overestimating Sociedad then fans can expect the same
outcome so far this season – another loss or disappointing draw at Old
Trafford. The fact that United has four ‘winnable’ games at home this month is
more incentive for them not to lose focus after the disappointing result
against Southampton.
David
Moyes will no doubt see the need to iron out the costly errors as well as the
need to finish their opponents at every opportunity. His team selection has
been the talking point all season and new signing Marouane Fellaini has been –
disappointing. Creative midfielder Shinji Kagawa has yet to start regularly
when United is clearly missing that creative spark in the park. Most players
Moyes rotates seem unable to produce consistent performance, highlighting the
need for players to play consistently and this increases the selection dilemma for
him (Moyes).
Results
in the Premier League had been disappointing but it is in this competition that
Manchester United is still considered doing reasonably well – one of the best
results for United this season was the 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Therefore
whichever starting XI Moyes put out there must not lose focus like they had all
season long. About time to bring cheers to United’s long suffering die hard
fans!
