David
Moyes complained about Manchester United fixtures, about how tough the run of
games United is suppose to face. But his ‘complaints’ stopped at Manchester
City games. West Bromwich Albion was supposed to be the ‘easier’ start of the
run, follow by Sunderland before the international break and look at what
happened!In
the end, whichever team David Moyes pick is secondary – he needs them to play
like Manchester United, playing without fear, playing with that hunger to win –
even at the last few minutes of the match. 6 games and 3 losses are bad, 12
position in the league table is equally bad. And to lose that game to West Brom
means everybody from Moyes, the coaching staff and the players must pick their
confidence up to a level expected of them.
With
Wayne Rooney supposedly to be fit in time for the game against Sunderland, it
would be good news for David Moyes – for the partnership with Robin Van Persie
to resume. But Moyes has to decide if Marouane Fellaini is the man to be
spearheading the attack from the midfield, his performance at the more advanced
attacking role so far has not been breathtaking. At best Fellaini is a central midfielder
playing well with Michael Carrick given a 4-2-3-1 formation. Maybe Fellaini is
still in the bedding in period – for Everton was a different class from
Manchester United all together, maybe he can be use in an attacking role after
all but time will be needed. In the meantime, Moyes has got to use what is at
his disposal. If Fellaini and Carrick partnership is Moyes’ preference then the
flanks should see attackers in the mould of Shinji Kagawa or Nani, and even
Adnan Januzaj – players who tend to cut infield from time to time to create the
attacking phase. Antonio Valencia is rather one dimensional while Ashley Young
is too error prone and indecisive. In a 4-2-3-1 formation, the trio of Wayne
Rooney, Nani and Kagawa should be a potent force to support Van Persie. Let’s
hope Moyes selects a team which will be balance enough for United to play – the
United way. Bearing in mind too that Sunderland is a club still in transition –
with the sacking of former manager Paolo Di Canio. As such this is a must win
game, a game which United and Moyes needs to win convincingly.
Sir
Alex Ferguson has repeatedly insisted that David Moyes will come good for
Manchester United. He knows the games, he knows Moyes and he knows United so
fans should trust ‘old Fergie’ just this once. Sure Ferguson makes mistakes
before in the football business but to handpick someone to take over your
legacy is a serious matter and Ferguson should know better than anyone else. In
his words 'support your manager'!
