This
speculation just would not go away. Just when it seems over, and yet it came
alive again. The question to ask is not whether we want Gareth Bale, rather
than if the Manchester United’s hierarchy will approve the kind of money
involved in this deal.
The
story in the Gareth Bale’s saga goes that – Real Madrid, having not finalized
the deal has began arrogantly – treating as if Gareth Bale is already a Real
Madrid player. Bale’s Real Madrid jersey goes on sale, the ceremony to welcome
Bale was put in place as well as announcing the broadcast time for the
welcoming. All these did not go down well with Tottenham Hotspurs, headed by non
other than Daniel Levy. While most of the people involve in this saga knows
well that Bale’s exit from Spurs is imminent, it is the manner of Real Madrid
that is threatening to jeopardize this deal. Bale was ordered back from Spain
to report for training – with Spurs although he is a no show.
Hence
the reports of Spurs wanting to consider ‘the other bid’ for Bale comes as no
surprise. For all we know it is just Levy’s tactic of telling Fiorentino Perez
that Real Madrid cannot just go in another club and prise away their star
player(s) as they wish. Aside from money (lots of them) comes the need to have
respect for fellow clubs as well. How true was the Manchester United link is
still anybody’s guess, United and David Moyes are ‘coy’ when ask about this linkage.
However,
Real Madrid had set the bar, a bar so high it attracts ridicule from the
football community. One only has to look at Cristiano Ronaldo for comparison –
the previous world record transfer. When Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid from
Manchester United back in 2008, he was already a proven winner, having won
Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, World Club Championship
to go along with a host of individual accolades. Gareth Bale on the other hand
has none – except for individual titles. This proves himself as a great player
– individual player. One has to win title for the team to be considered in the
accolades of greatness and Bale has none to show – at least so far. Ronaldo has
since repay Real Madrid – with on the field performance as well as commercial
returns. Bale meanwhile did not even make the top ten in jersey sales (Wayne
Rooney was No 1) in the Premier League last season.
With
this type of pricing, it maybe out of Manchester United’s range. Bear in mind
that United has certain ways of doing business when comes to buying players,
one of them is – not to pay over the odd for players, no matter how big the
players are – remember Wesley Sneidjer?
Therefore sensible United fans knows that since Real Madrid had lodge in
£85+ million for Bale, the price United should be around that region too (or even higher), and
that will be way too high. United’s fans knows too that it is not one player
that will help wins titles but rather collectively as a team. For Manchester United to pay that kind of
price for Bale would be purely fantasy football.
However
one scenario could happen – for United’s supporters to see Gareth Bale in a
United’s shirt. Assuming that the current deal with Real Madrid goes wrong – badly,
so badly Daniel Levy refuses to do business with Real Madrid, ever. It will
also comes to a situation where Bale will be so incensed and angry he refuses
to play for Spurs again. With Real Madrid out of the picture and Bale refusing to
play for Spurs, Levy will have no choice but to loan him out, yes – LOAN!. Levy
will have somebody else covering Bale’s high wages – probably a loan signing
fee as well – instead of having Bale disrupts the morale of other Spur’s
players. This is where Manchester United could have Bale – even it is for short
terms. Possible? Like they said, anything is possible in football!
