One
word – Usain Bolt! Is he down to play at Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial as had
been suggested by the media all along. But seriously this could all just
publicity as the Athletics World Championship is schedule on the 10th – 18th August,
with Bolt’s main event the 100m slotted on the 10th and 11th,
and his other event – the 200m schedule on 16th and 17th
August. This legendary sprinter – a self confess Manchester United fan was even
quoted saying he might make an appearance. Fat chance……
This
testimonial match is set – to recognize Rio Ferdinand’s service to Manchester
United – 12 years. While the main highlight is Ferdinand there are many issues
surfacing that will grab the headlines. Unconvincing pre season results, no
marquee signing – in fact no significant signing so far, and most of all - the Wayne Rooney Saga. In addition to
that it is two days before the FA Community Shield at Wembley, suggesting that
David Moyes may have already make certain decisions on his lineup for the
Sunday’s clash against Wigan. All this might also inevitably turn its attention
away from the star of the show – Rio Ferdinand.
For
most Manchester United’s supporters this is the right opportunity to pay
tribute to the man who have serve the club for so long, a player who has the
best interest of the club in his heart, a player who speak highly of the club
as well as defending the club when necessary. Rio Ferdinand makes a good example to the meaning loyalty - a rare trait these days in modern professional football. Not one to criticize when things are not going well for him and outspoken when he feels injustice was done. Ferdinand will also be remember for his lengthy ban (for missing drug test), as well as the racism row involving his younger brother Anton and John Terry. As age caught up, back injuries had hamper his otherwise proud record in the heart of Manchester United's defense. To his credit he has never gave up and opt for a rather different training program, and even gave up his England's career to prolong his playing days at United. Let’s not miss this match.
